Gorbel: Personal Fall Arrest Systems
October 25th, 2017 -
Falls are among the most common causes of serious work related injuries and deaths. In 2014, 359 out of 899 total work place deaths were from falls.
Know the ABC’s of fall protection
OSHA has mandated that when workers are four feet or more off the ground they must be provided with fall protection equipment such as personal fall arrest systems (PFAS) by the employer. A personal fall arrest system (PFAS) is an active means of protecting workers because they include an anchor, body harness, and a connector such as a shock-absorbing fall arrest lanyard or self-retracting lanyard.
Always provide workers with the kind of equipment they need to get the job done safely.
PFAS are not a “one size fits all”. Every fall protection scenario is different, so it is absolutely crucial that you have a knowledgeable resource who is OSHA Fall Protection trained and can look at your unique application and provide the best solution that fits your needs.
Falls can be prevented when workers understand proper set-up and safe use of equipment.
Employers must train workers in hazard recognition and in the care and safe use of fall protection systems. Remember, tie off to the anchor, make sure your PFAS fits, and regularly inspect all fall protection equipment to ensure it's still in good condition and safe to use.
We at Kenco Toyota-Lift firmly believe that by implementing good housekeeping rules, choosing the correct personal fall arrest equipment, and having fall protection safety training, falls can be prevented and lives can be saved.
